Demolition work has begun at the former Rayware site on Speke Boulevard making way for a new Home Bargains store.
TJ Morris gained planning consent for the 26,000 sq. ft. store back in March 2017 and clearance work has now begun at the problem site, which has laid dormant for a number of years.
The new store will rival Home Bargains’ other megastore in Aintree and will also feature a garden centre. A further 27,500 sq. ft. retail unit is also planned, alongside a 1,850 sq. ft. restaurant or leisure unit.
The new store will further enhance the shopping and leisure offer in South Liverpool, with work beginning at the site as the brand new cinema and restaurant complex at New Mersey Shopping Park nears completion.
The new store will occupy only a small part of the area being cleared, with the eastern part of the site having outline consent for up to 97,000 sq. ft. of industrial or distribution space.
The scheme attracted local objections including those from rival stores Asda and B&M but council planners gave consent, highlighting that the new store would provide £25M local investment and 100 local jobs.
