SLH tenant sees life-changing new home for the first time

Last month we were delighted to show one of our tenants around their newly-adapted and fully-renovated home for the first time.

South Liverpool Homes (SLH) tenant Manuela lived with her disabled son Liam and family in one of our homes in Garston but, due to Liam’s degenerative condition, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the home was no longer suitable and the hunt was on for a new home that would meet Liam and the family’s changing needs.

SLH began the process of finding a suitable home that had the scope to be adapted to suit the needs of Manuela’s family. However, it became apparent that none of our current stock was suitable so a home in Speke was eventually purchased by SLH and completely renovated by Avela Home Service.

An extension was built at the side of the home to accommodate Liam’s downstairs bedroom and specialist level-access bathroom, while outside the front garden was remodeled and a ramp fitted to provide easy access to the home.

The downstairs was extensively remodeled to allow easy movement throughout the ground floor. Garden access was also made disability-friendly so Liam could enjoy the new outdoor and indoor space.

The whole home was completely renovated by our contractor Avela Home Service, including a new kitchen and bathroom before being decorated and finally revealed to Manuela.

“SLH bought a house just before lockdown to adapt for my family and meet Liam’s needs,” Manuela said. “I was worried that with Covid, no work to the house would happen and we would have to remain in our current unsuitable home longer. How wrong was I?

“Avela carried on working on the house throughout. I received regular videos to show progress on the work, which brought much joy to my children and I. Due to Liam’s condition, we have all had to isolate, but seeing the videos has kept me going and made lockdown so much more bearable.

“I am happy beyond words that my move to the house has not been affected by Covid. I’ve been involved throughout and have even been asked to choose the kitchen units, tiles for kitchen and bathroom and the paint colour.

“They have even made me wardrobes and a cupboard in hall which was totally unexpected. Being on my own with three children - the way they have dealt with me has taken away a lot of stress and worry. I cannot thank SLH enough and I am truly grateful”.
